Mazzon Becomes New Avtodor Head Coach

Andrea MAZZON became new head coach of Avtodor Saratov. The agreement with the 51-year old Italian coach was signed for the 2017/2018 season. He will start working in the club in the middle of August.


Mazzon has more than 25 years of coaching experience in proffessional basketball, 13 seasons as head coach in the Italian and Greek clubs, NBA D-league and Chinese league experience, "Coach of the Year" awards in Greece and Italy. He won Korac Cup and the Italian SuperCup, reached the Euroleague Top 16, as well as the ULEB Cup and Saporta Cup finals. Teams headed by the Italian coach have always been among the top 3 best defensive teams in their leagues. He prefers fast and aggressive style of basketball.

Mazzon is hardworking person who is strong in teaching players and developing young talents. The Italian coach has the authority and strong character. But at the same time he is able to find easily a common language with experienced players. He everytime looks for developing players’ fundamentals, great executions and teamwork. Very good communicator who speaks Italian, English, Spanish and Greek languages.

In the 1996/97 season, Mazzon won the Italian SuperCup and advanced to the Saporta Cup final with Glaxo Verona where they suffered a 64-78 loss against Real Madrid. Next season Glaxo Verona under the head of the Italian coach won the Korac Cup as they were stronger than Crvena Zvezda Belgrade in two final games (68-74 and 73-64). One year later, his team achieved the semifinal of the Korac Cup. In 2006 Aris Thessaloniki coached by Mazzon participated in the ULEB Cup final where they lost Dynamo Moscow with Dusan Ivkovic by 60-73. In the 2006/2007 season, his Greek club deserved the spot in the Euroleague Top 16.

From 2009 to 2013 Mazzon headed Umana Reyer Venezia. In 2011 the team from Venice promoted in the Italian Serie A. After that, Umana Reyer reached the Italian league play-offs and the Italian Cup Final Eight every year. Andrea worked in the NBA club Philadelphia 76ers system during the 2015/2016 season. Last season he started as the head coach in the Chinese club Foshan Long Lions.

Mazzon coached Galanda, Frosini, Bonora, Rombaldoni and many other famous Italian players. Andrea selected and coached two of the best Greek players ever, Papalukas in Panionios Athens and Papanikolau in Aris Thessaloniki.
